The Terminator
Wed May 08 2024Quick Synopsis
Lacks the production value of the sequel, with some SFX not aging well, but it's still a solidly made film with strong writing and a shorter, more focused plot, featuring several memorable scenes.
The film excels in its use of music and visuals, creating an atmospheric tension that elevates key moments. The haunting soundtrack and the gritty, neon-lit cinematography add layers of depth to this iconic sci-fi thriller.
First, there was this Terminator...
Terminator 2 is one of my favourite films, not just on its own merits but also because I saw it when I was young, and it left a lasting impression on me. I didn't watch the original until I was much older, and I was surprised at how good it was. Despite its quality, it seems to be overshadowed by its sequel, which maybe understandable - everyone knows Terminator 2, but the original often goes unmentioned.
The setting is more humble as are the characters and generally this adds to the quality of the film, rather than detract from it. However, there are moments when it feels like a B-movie, with sudden tone shifts or cheesy lines.
Despite some moments of awkward dialogue and questionable decision-making by the characters, The Terminator is a well-crafted film that maintains a steady, engaging pace. The writing is solid, weaving a compelling narrative that kept me hooked throughout. There are plenty of action scenes and intense sequences that stand the test of time.
Although it lacks the production value and acclaim of its sequel, The Terminator offers a more grounded and gritty story that's well worth watching.
