Shogun
Wed May 08 2024Quick Synopsis
A solidly made show with polished writing and direction, reminiscent of a premium HBO series at it's prime. The characters and plotting are very strong, though some episodes suffer from pacing issues. It shines brightest when it takes its time, allowing the story and characters to breathe.
A wonderfully meditative show, much like the culture it represents, beautifully showcasing moody scenery and an admirable, if complex honor system. The depth of its characters brings significant emotional impact and some very tense scenes, excelling in creating an immersive and heartfelt experience.
A show with gravity...
What a wonderful surprise this show turned out to be. Reminiscent of the glory days of HBO when standards were set exceptionally high, especially compared to modern TV offerings. From the first few minutes, it becomes evident that this is a well-crafted show, giving you the feeling that you are in good hands.
The series bears strong similarities to the early seasons of Game of Thrones - before that show went off the rails. Shogun takes its time to develop a tense and intriguing plot, with complex, morally grey characters you don't know whether to love or hate.
Although the show can be very tense and exciting, it truly shines in the slower episodes where it allows us to get to know the characters as they get to know each other. Much like the culture and scenery in which the show is set, these moments can be quite meditative and poignant. Despite already exceeding my expectations early on, it was in these areas where the show really elevated itself and I fell in love with it.
The only issue I had with the show was the pacing in certain episodes toward the end, and I felt that the conclusion felt rushed and unsatisfactory. Additionally, this is supposedly a one-off miniseries, at the time of writing this review at least, which will be a shame if it is the case.
A serious and mature show with strong writing and complex characters which scratches that itch left by the excellent early seasons of Game of Thrones.
