Mon May 27 2024Quick Synopsis
Moves at a smooth pace. Interesting, if basic, plot - until it's not. Solid characters and dialogue. A show well made.
Mostly neutral tone with occasional dark undertones. Its aesthetic is clean and cool, drawing heavily from noir influences, complemented by a subtle yet effective soundtrack. Lacking a strong emotional resonance, opting instead for a sleek presentation.
Colin Farrell in a noir-style mystery is never a bad idea...
There are some actors that can make just about anything worth-watching simply because they are in it. Colin Farrell is one of those actors for me.
He is starting to become a presence on screen, like the greats before him, where this presence alone elevates the material. Everything else in the show isn't necessarily bad. Even though it's a by-the-numbers plot and has the typical array of characters that you would expect to find in such a show, it's still done very well. It's just that Farrell is what makes this a must-watch.
Without spoiling anything, there is another aspect to this show which on one hand makes it very interesting, but on the other, feels shoe-horned in and a bit unnecessary. The issue I have with it is that the show suddenly becomes about two different stories, whereas I was really enjoying the original story's flow and would prefer if it focused on one or the other, not both.
As far as TV shows go nowadays, this certainly stands out - which maybe isn't the greatest compliment. Still, it's worth watching for it's solid story, classic noir style, interesting twist and most of all, Colin Farrell just driving around the place.
A fairly routine story is elevated by a typically brilliant Colin Farrell, solid writing and a strange, if unnecessary, twist.
